German Brand Award for Transporeon Branding
Transporeon carries home prestigious awards

Transporeon has been rewarded for its cutting-edge design and branding strategy by the jury of the German Brand Award 2020, with a Gold award in the ‘Excellent Brands – Logistics & Infrastructure’ category, and as ‘Winner’ in the ‘Excellence in Brand Strategy and Creation – Brand Design’ category.

We congratulate our colleagues for this great success. We are also quite pleased about the award as we adapted our corporate design to a large extent to the new Transporeon branding last year.

The Brand Award recognises the year’s most innovative examples of brand presence and creative campaigns. The competition is organized by the German Brand Institute in order to strengthen brand management as a critical success factor for companies competing in both the domestic and international markets.

Stephan Sieber, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Transporeon, commented, “As an innovation leader in a fast-moving business environment, we knew that we needed an impactful rebranding that matches our ambition. The response to the new look and branding, developed in partnership with design agency eobiont, shows that we got it right. These latest awards are the icing on the cake.”

Recently, the design of the Transport Market Monitor (TMM) has been adapted, too. Users of our powerful online service showing the price and capacity development of the European road transport market can look forward to the new look.

The TMM is available free of charge at the following link: www.transportmarketmonitor.com

Market Intelligence Special Pharma
Special Benchmarking of the MII Global Air Cargo

The transport of pharmaceutical products is associated with high demands for shippers. Due to the product properties, they are usually transported at a controlled temperature. They require special transport containers and storage equipment. Regulations and strict quality guidelines must be observed. Often the delivery is time-critical and requires a fast and safe handling.

Reliable market information on price developments, processes and services is not available. Shippers are more inclined towards long-term cooperation with service providers. The air freight experts of Tim Consult want to change this situation, now.

The Market Intelligence Initiative Global Air Cargo offers a special initiative “MII Pharma Air Cargo” in addition to the usual service, this year.  This special initiative was created mainly for companies in the pharmaceutical industry, there is no comparable approach in the market.  It analyses freight rates and service levels especially for temperature-controlled air cargo. In addition, participants will receive a detailed insight into current market developments and best practices. The results of the special benchmarking should be available by the end of the year.

For this new initiative Tim Consult has brought a pharmaceutical and air freight expert on board. Ingo Ocklenburg, former Corporate Category Lead Air Cargo at Bayer AG, will support us. In our May newsletter we have asked him about his experiences with temperature controlled air cargo. Please, find the interview here.

Are you a shipper from the pharmaceutical industry and interested in a reliable benchmarking of costs and services for temperature-controlled air freight?  Then become part of the special initiative “MII Pharma Air Cargo”. Our air cargo experts will be pleased to provide further information. Please contact them by using this link. Or send an e-mail to sales@timconsult.com.

Coronavirus: Current Effects on the Air Freight Market
Market observations of MII Global Air Cargo

On a global scale air freight rates seem to continue to stabilize or even decrease. Our experts expect further price and capacity recoveries in the near future. However this is still not the case for transports from China. Further increases in freight rates were recorded there, in particular triggered by medical exports. In India, too, export volumes and freight rates increase due to medical transports.

Air freight operations also appear to be stabilizing. For example, an improved cargo network to locked down countries have been established.

Almost all top 50 countries show a decline in cargo volumes in the first quarter of 2020. Belgium alone indicates an increase in cargo volume driven by pharmaceuticals, live animals and dangerous goods.

The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) reports about capacity bottlenecks for transports to and from Africa. According to TIACA this causes problems for urgent supplies deliveries and has a negative impact on the export industries.

European Road Transport Market: Price and Capacity Developments April 2020
Transport Market Monitor

Compared to April 2019, 65% more road transport capacity is currently available in Europe. Available capacity has also seen a significant increase of more than 40% compared to March 2020. Surplus capacity has led to falling prices on the spot market: the price decrease compared to April 2019 currently stands at more than 12%.

Surplus capacities and lower transport prices in Europe are above all the consequence of reduced industrial demand: in the automotive industry alone 50% more transport capacity is available than one year ago.

This analysis derives from the Transport Market Monitor (TMM). The TMM is a unique web-based information service which provides shippers with reliable information on how the European road transport market is developing. The TMM is based on data generated by the Transporeon platforms and analyzed by Tim Consult.

Basis for analysis

  • 20 billion Euro freight turnover per year
  • More than 1.8 million freight orders per year

“The trend towards increasing capacity surplus continues in the European road transport market”, says Oliver Kahrs, Managing Director Tim Consult. “While we look forward to the current easing of Coronavirus restrictions, we can be sure it will be some time before we reach pre-crisis levels across sectors. During these difficult times we want to support all market participants. That’s why we’re offering up to 31 May all companies free access to our TMM Premium+ package.”

Coronavirus: Current Situation on the Container Freight Market
Market observations of MII Global Ocean Transport

On the container freight market some major trends influence operations.

For long haul services blank sailings are still a matter of concern. Further blank sailings have been announced for the Transpacific trade. The Asia-Europe trade is suffering its second wave of blank sailings.

Announced network restructuring is now also clearly visible. According to our experts these changes might stay with us for quite a while.

In Europe, capacity is currently improving because the market is recovering from the first wave of blank sailings. According to our experts it is likely that the second wave of blank sailings will reach the market in approximately two weeks. This may cause another period of massively restricted capacities lasting between two and four weeks. Our experts hope that the market will return to a new normal after this period, providing 90 to 95% of usual capacity, then.

At the same time European countries are slowly reviving their economies. Our experts predict a moderate recovery for May. If this recovery provokes a demand hike in the coming period of restricted capacity, the container freight market will certainly come under pressure again.

Compared to Europe the USA is still some steps behind in economic recovery. Our experts assume that they will need three to four weeks more to reach the European level.

Coronavirus: Current Situation on the Air Freight Market
Market observations of MII Global Air Cargo

Our air freight experts report a further improvement for the trade between China and Europe. The average rate levels have fallen further and are now at about 50% above contracted rate level.

For the Transatlantic and the Transpacific trade contracted rates cannot be maintained in most cases. Rate levels remain stable since last week, but they are still 200% above the contracted rates.

Increasing number of shippers & forwarders negotiate short-term contracts which are valid for one to two weeks only.

One of the biggest challenges for forwarders is still the lack of belly capacity due to restricted international and domestic travel and grounded PAX fleet. Lanes that traditionally rely on belly capacity like Transatlantic and Inner Asia show the sharpest decline.

As a consequence, freighters are providing 75% of global air cargo capacity
instead of less than 50% before the crisis. Additionally, more than 120 PAX aircrafts have been modified to operate cargo-only flights. Our air freight experts assume that these numbers will rise further to ensure transports of critical goods.

3.4.2020
Coronavirus: Current Situation on the Air Freight Market
Market observations of MII Global Air Cargo

Further countries have suspended international flights which has provoked short term capacity crunches and rate hikes. Our air freight experts assume that more and more corridors will be affected by flight cancellations and as a result by capacity bottlenecks and extremely high rates.

The situation on China-related lanes has eased despite the grounded PAX fleet. The average rate levels have fallen further and are now below a +200% increase.

In contrast, transatlantic trade shows further rate increases. Current rate levels are at least two times higher than the contracted ones. As more and more PAX flights are cancelled, service providers offer charters to secure capacity.

All parties are working on capacity provisions. Service providers are increasingly using cargo aircrafts and extend daily services and networks. Furthermore the airlines use PAX aircrafts for cargo-only transportation or offer their fleet for temporary charter.

On corridors where these measures are already taking effect our experts observe a slight recovery with further declining rate levels. In general, shippers still purchase more intensively on the spot market.

The next big challenge will be probably the emerging market countries where important capacity crunches are expected.

Coronavirus: Current Situation on the Container Freight Market
Market observations of MII Global Ocean Transport

The current global economic slowdown, especially related to consumption and industrial production in the US and Europe has now, as expected, resulted in further announced sailing cancelations, as carriers cut capacity to preserve rate levels. Individual ports also report a growing backlog of containers, not picked up by consignees.

Additional cancelations and disruptions are expected in the upcoming two weeks due to the heavy-handed implementation of curfews & shutdowns in a number of countries like e.g. India, Malaysia and others.

While effects are more global as those of the Chinese factory shut down, capacity cuts are so far not as severe and disruptions will hopefully be more manageable.

Meanwhile European exporters still feel the effects of the initial wave of blank sailings on the back haul out of Europe, resulting in capacity constraints and empty container shortages for specialized equipment, especially in outlying regions, as well as higher spot rates and little tolerance for excessive volumes.

Feeder operations in Europe and Asia are also affected by cancelations and reroutings.

A watchful eye on carrier situation is still recommended. Our sea freight experts do not expect bankruptcies but a higher instability which might provoke further fusions, divestments or nationalizations.

Transport Market Monitor as a helpful source of information
Market Knowledge in Times of Coronavirus

The coronavirus pandemic is causing turbulence in transport markets worldwide. Efficient freight purchasing is more difficult than ever. In this situation, it is helpful for shippers who purchase freight space on the European transport market to have sound knowledge of current price and capacity developments. Our online service Transport Market Monitor (TMM) provides this information, filtered by period, sectors and industries.

In response to the Coronavirus crisis, we have decided to expand the service:

TMM Premium Plus package free of charge

We now offer free access to the most comprehensive service package of our TMM. You can use this valuable online resource to analyze developments in the transport market in Europe and additionally in up to 80 countries and 10 different industries.

If you are interested, please register for the freemium version. You will then automatically receive access to the Premium Plus charts.

If you are already a TMM Freemium user, please register as usual. You will directly see all Premium Plus features on your dashboard.

Change from monthly to biweekly analysis

To provide our subscribers with the latest information, we have decided to update the data in the TMM twice a month from now on. You can log into the TMM and view the updated indices and reports, which include all transport data up to and including March 17.

This was the wish of many users who approached us. In addition, the shorter cycle is especially helpful now, as the situation on the transport market changes at very short notice.

Please note: The TMM is based on real transport data of up to 150,000 transports per month. In the mid-month update, there are fewer shipments for the index calculation than in the monthly update. It is therefore possible that for some options, certain industries or country-country combinations, no index can be displayed or less information is available.

Transport Market Monitor

If you have any questions concerning the new TMM features, please send an e-mail to: info@transportmarketmonitor.com.

Transporeon Newsletter: Action Update Coronavirus
Market Knowledge in Times of Coronavirus

The Coronavirus and its effects are very present for us every day and are certainly associated with great concern and uncertainty. None of us really knows how the situation will develop and what consequences we must expect.

Nevertheless, as a globally active management consultancy, we are trying to support our clients in this difficult situation. Our strength is our profound market knowledge and our insights into the processes and mechanisms of the worldwide transport markets.

Together with our colleagues from Transporeon, we have therefore considered how we can inform our clients and contacts in a meaningful way.

One measure is a weekly newsletter, which Transporeon is publishing now: Transporeon Action Update on Coronavirus.

It contains up-to-date information on the effects of the Coronavirus on container freight, air freight and road & rail freight. The managers of our Market Intelligence Initiatives Global Ocean Transport, Global Air Cargo and Europe Road & Rail contribute to the newsletter every week with their knowledge and experience.

Annual Conference of the MII Europe Road & Rail Online this Year
Flexible Solutions in Times of Coronavirus

In times of Coronavirus, flexible solutions are necessary. Therefore, our Annual Conference, normally a 2-day-event, had to be converted into a packed online conference.

The Annual Conference of our MII Europe Road & Rail Community was scheduled for March, 4 to 5, 2020 in Brussels. Our experts for road and rail transport had evaluated the results of the last benchmarking round in the usual accuracy and quality. Exciting presentations on innovative models for transport management and transport allocation, green logistics or expected political and legal regulations were prepared. Renowned external speakers had agreed to attend.

At the end of February then, the Tim Consult management decided to cancel the two-day conference due to the progressive spread of the Coronavirus. Since the strategic classification of the benchmarking results as well as the unprecedented analyses and insights into the European transport market are of great importance to the Community members, the MII team set up an online conference at short notice. This had never been done before in the history of MII Europe Road & Rail.

The participants were informed in due time about the strategic implications and the classification of the benchmarking results and received up-to-date input on market trends, rate developments and cost factors. In a Q/A session the effects of the Coronavirus on European land transport were discussed.

The participants responded very positively to the unusual format and the fast and flexible action of the MII Europe Road & Rail team. This was also the result of a participant survey, which we realized directly after the event. All of them missed the presentations by renowned external experts, the intensive discussions and the interactive exchange, which usually make up a large part of the conferences.

Effects of the coronavirus on container shipping capacities
Market observations of MII Global Ocean Transport

The experts of our Market Intelligence Initiative Global Ocean Transport have been monitoring the effects of the corona virus on international container shipping since the beginning of the year.

According to their analyses, exports from China to Europe and vice versa have not yet returned to their usual level, although a large number of Chinese factories are now operating again.

For exports from China to Europe, there are currently no capacity bottlenecks as demand has fallen more sharply than the available capacity. Our ocean freight experts expect a temporary increase in demand as soon as the situation in China recovers. Companies will then try to make up the shortfall.

European exporters can anticipate reduced capacity from the beginning of March. Then the cancelled sailings will show their effect. Our experts expect higher spot rates and less planning tolerance. Demand peaks can lead to serious interruptions at that point.

Transport Market Monitor – Product Feature Update
Insight into the European Transport Market

In August 2019 we successfully launched our new online service “Transport Market Monitor” (TMM), a joint project of Transporeon and Tim Consult.
The TMM provides detailed information on the monthly price and capacity developments on the European transport market. For this purpose, it combines the data of up to 150,000 road-bound freight orders that are processed annually via Transporeon’s spot market. The data is comparable on a time axis and can be filtered and graphically processed according to numerous sectors and industries.

The November release of the Transport Market Monitor (TMM) came with two new features, which we would like to introduce to you more in detail.

New Feature 1: Free Trial Month

The TMM is currently offered in three different versions: Freemium, Premium and Premium Plus. The Premium versions offer a higher level of detail and more insights into transport market developments.
With the new release, it is now possible to test both Premium Packages for one month. Completely free of charge and without any risk.
The Trial Month can be activated with just a few clicks. Please note that subscribers won’t be charged until after the free trial month. Within the free trial month, cancelation is possible anytime.
All information on the TMM and the features of the different packages can be found here.

New Feature 2: Pay via Bank Transfer (Invoice)

The second enhancement for the TMM in November is the option to pay via bank transfer or invoice respectively. With this modification we react to numerous requests from our customers who asked us to offer payment via bank transfer in addition to payment with credit card.

If you have any questions regarding the new features or the TMM in general, please send an email to: info@transportmarketmonitor.com.

E-book: Hinterland Transport in Containerized Maritime Transport
Expert knowledge MII Global Ocean Transport

Hinterland transport is of enormous strategic and operational importance for containerized maritime transport. Very few shippers are located directly at the seaport and are therefore dependent on a well-functioning connection to the hinterland. The quality of hinterland transports is therefore decisive for the success or failure of a global supply chain.

As a consulting company, we are close to the market for our customers and support them in optimizing their supply chains. The importance of hinterland transport for global supply chains has therefore prompted our sea freight experts to investigate the possibilities for economically and ecologically sensible hinterland transport as part of a Master’s thesis they supervised.

In particular, the team of the Market Intelligence Initiative Global Ocean Transport together with the master student examined infrastructure and modes of transport as well as their framework conditions. In addition, 114 logistic experts from 44 shipping companies were asked about their experiences with European hinterland transport. The results of the analysis focus on the hinterland of the North Range ports.

We have now compiled an excerpt from the Master’s thesis and the survey in an e-book, which we make available to interested parties free of charge.

Interested? Then order the e-book directly free of charge via the following button:

Webinar: The Logistics Market Africa – Challenges and Chances
Expert Knowledge Ocean Freight Market

“Africa is the New Asia” – Many companies focus on the African continent in the hope of finding new business opportunities. The reasons for this are obvious: improved political conditions, above-average growth rates in gross domestic products and a population willing to consume.

The complexity of the African continent with 54 countries, in which more than eight different official languages and up to 2000 different dialects are spoken, demands a high degree of sensitivity. Business is considerably driven by relationships. This does not make it easy to develop a strategic approach. In addition, in almost all African countries the underdeveloped transport infrastructure confronts shippers with considerable hurdles.

With up-to-date information on the special features and focal points of the African logistics market and profound market knowledge, shippers are ideally prepared for these challenges.

In this context, we recommend the webinar of our Market Intelligence Initiative Global Ocean Transport. Our analysts Maria Kupfer and Jonas Predikant will give you an insight into the special features of the African logistics market.

What we will explore:

  • Current situation of society, economy and infrastructure in Africa
  • Ocean transport in Africa
  • Inland transportation in Africa

Tim Consult publishes e-book: The Chinese One Belt, One Road Initiative
Latest developments on the Eurasian land bridge

As part of the “Chinese One Belt, One Road Initiative”, more and more services are being implemented for end-to-end supply chains in trade between the Far East, Central Asia and Europe. The “New Silk Road” is a long-term project in China dedicated to the development of transport, supply and trade infrastructures. To this end, a large number of Chinese infrastructure investments and economic co-operations will be bundled to improve transport connections.
For shippers, this creates new interesting alternatives to air and sea transport.

Since 2017 our see freight experts from the Market Intelligence Initiative Global Ocean Transport have been analyzing the developments of the “Chinese One Belt, One Road Initiative” and in particular those of the Eurasian Land Bridge as an attractive alternative to see freight.

This year for the first time our see freight experts have summarized the developments 2019 in an e-book. The main focus of the e-book is on container transports by rail on the Eurasian Land Bridge. These were analyzed by our sea freight experts according to various criteria. In addition, the e-book informs about the results of a survey among shippers in which the participants were asked about their experiences with the Eurasian Land Bridge.
The e-book is available free of charge to interested parties. Please order it directly via the following button:

14 Brave Runners Defy Summer Heat

A hot office day with unbearable temperatures, poor air, spinning heads, transpiring bodies and on top 5 km of running at  36 degrees minimum. Impressive! The outstanding commitment of our valiant runners is second to none.

While the rest of the team was already enjoying cool drinks on their balconies or in a beer garden, they participated to the Bauhaus company run in Mannheim. For the fourth edition of the popular sports event, 3,526 runners ran the 5 km course around Luisenpark this year

Due to the high temperatures, the event organizer decided to do not measure running times. He wanted to make sure that the participants run with a lot of consideration for their own health. Also for this reason the start was postponed to 8 pm.

Health or not, our team gave everything. Since this year the organizer did not evaluate the sporting performance but the size of the teams, the creativity of the shirts and the commitment of company trainees, our runners went away empty-handed.

But at the end of the evening it was all about team spirit and participation and so our Tim Consult finishers celebrated happily at the “After-Run-Party” with refreshing drinks, a varied catering offer and spirited live music.

The Future of the EU Consortia Block Exemption Regulation – Pros, Cons & Market Impacts
TIM CONSULT Market Intelligence

In April 2020 the European Commission will decide if the Block Exemption Regulation (BER) will be repealed or extended for another five years. The BER regulates the cooperation agreements in the liner shipping sector from and to Europe.

Alliances that restrict competition are generally banned by EU law. Under certain conditions the BER allows cooperation agreements of shipping lines aiming at providing joint cargo transport services. Their combined market share should not exceed 30%. The alliance should still have sufficient competition and should not be used to fix prices or share the market. Finally the alliance should have the aim to realize improvements in productivity and service quality.

If these preconditions are fulfilled, the alliances are exempted from the prohibition of anticompetitive agreements as laid down in Article 101(1) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU).

At present the European Commission is working on an assessment of the BER’s future relevance and market participants are lively discussing the pros and cons. Until April next year it has to be decided whether the BER should expire or should be prolonged and under which conditions.

As it is our aim to provide our customers with current market knowledge our experts from the Market Intelligence Initiative Global Ocean Transport have prepared a short evaluation of the current BER situation. We present a summary of their findings in our May newsletter.

The Challenges for Ocean Transport in 2019+ Sulfur, Economics and Technology
Update Conference of the MII Global Ocean Transport

On April 10, 2019 TIM CONSULT had invited to its Update Conference of the Market Intelligence Initiative Global Ocean Transport to Frankfurt Airport.

Since 2002, we have been analyzing market developments and freight rates for worldwide ocean transport as well as associated pre-carriage and onward carriage in the hinterland for a community of large shippers.

Once a year the Community of freight procurement and supply chain experts meets at this shippers only event to discuss current analysis results, market trends, challenges ahead and best practices. Our participants appreciate the information as perfect preparation for coming freight rate negotiations.

Our Highlights at this year’s Update Conference:

  • Global ocean container transport – outlook 2019/20 and driving factors
  • Low Sulfur Cap 2020 – facts & correlations
  • Procurement professional’s experience: challenges and expectations
  • On the way to the “new normal”: panel discussion
  • Market Intelligence Initiative: relaunches, events and activities

This “Shippers only Event” attracted numerous renowned shippers in 2019, so that our number of participants was 30% higher than in the previous year. For us this is proof that our Update Conferences provide valuable input about the international container freight market.

The more than 100 participants showed great interest in our experts‘ top-notch analysis on current market developments and the underlying driving factors. In addition the valuable insights on performant procurement strategies and best practices were highly appreciated.  A highlight for all participants was certainly the exchange of experiences between the MII Community members and the “MII-Newbies” from different industries.

Thanks to the positive reactions of all participants, we are very optimistic and assume that we were able to win one or two new Community members at this year’s Update Conference.

Container transport: pre-carriage and on-carriage on the test bench
The ocean freight experts of MII Global Ocean Transport carry out inland analysis

For efficient sea freight transport, the pre-carriages and on-carriages in the countries of loading and arrival are also decisive for success. Influencing factors such as the political situation in the respective countries, legal regulations, road and rail infrastructures, capacity bottlenecks and price competition make life difficult for container freight shippers. For this reason, the sea freight experts of TIM CONSULT carry out regular domestic analyses.

Since the end of February the results of the last inland analysis of the Market Intelligence Initiative Global Ocean Transport are available. An overview of the analyzed markets can be found here.

Prior to this, our sea freight experts had examined the global market for container pre-carriages and on-carriages in detail. Their analysis revealed above all the challenges on the domestic transport markets described below:

The Brazilian transportation market is severely affected by strikes and infrastructure bottlenecks. Prices per kilometer are also significantly higher than in other emerging markets such as South Africa and Mexico.

The obvious price competition between road and rail for transcontinental transports in the USA also confronts global shippers with difficult decisions. Extremely high prices and capacity bottlenecks are proving to be problematic for short-haul shipments in the USA.

For European shippers, the loss of efficiency due to low water in 2018 and the resulting switch from barge to more expensive modes of transport play a decisive role.

According to Clemens Schapeler, Initiative Manager Global Ocean Transport, delays in sea transport are increasing as shipping companies consolidate. In this situation, pre-carriage and on-carriage as well as booking processes become decisive levers for the optimization of global supply chains.

Tendering in price-volatile times
TIM CONSULT and TICONTRACT in an expert interview

There is no doubt that the global transport market is experiencing turbulent times. Low capacities and rising transport prices are colliding with an increased demand for international transports. Many shippers wonder whether it makes sense to put transport services out to tender in this situation. What is your strategy?

Martin Beyrer, Director Business Development at Ticontract – the leading online platform for freight tendering and e-sourcing – spoke with Christian Dolderer, Initiative Manager Market Intelligence Initiative (MII) Road & Rail, about this topic.

Find out in the interview:

  • how important in-depth market knowledge is in times of strongly fluctuating and incalculable capacities
  • why an intelligent tendering process can help in turbulent times
  • how to decide for the right timing to run tenders

Read the complete interview

You want to know more? We would be pleased to discuss with you personally how we can support you in such turbulent times.

Newest developments of the Eurasian Land Bridge
Update Report covering the Chinese One Belt - One Road Initiative

Traffic on the Eurasian Land Bridge is growing, continuously expanding the end-to-end supply chain service scope and delivery options between Far East, Central Asia, and Europe. Shippers are profiting from this developing alternative to air and ocean transport.

The rapid growth has been carefully monitored within our Market Intelligence Initiative Global Ocean Transport since Autumn 2017 and a new update has now been published. We comprehensively examine the entire Chinese One Belt – One Road initiative from several perspectives. This vast, long-term project bundles significant Chinese infrastructure investment and trade agreements but specifically accelerates freight transport connectivity. The Eurasian Land Bridge Container Rail Project is the most well-known part of this One Belt – One Road initiative, now encompassing multiple East-West routes.

Additionally, we provide an overview of available new railway routings, developments with regard to capacities and transit times, and a discussion of the current Eurasian Land Bridge competitive market.

If you are interested in the Eurasian Land Bridge Report, please contact Clemens Schapeler. He will be pleased to inform you.

Chasing Change: Are We Building Sustainable Strategies
F & L November Meeting 2018 in Madrid

On November 15-16, 2018, F&L, the European Freight and Logistics Leaders Forum, welcomed an international audience of speakers and participants to its November Meeting in Madrid. F&L is a non-lobby, non-profit organization uniting leaders from leading industrial and retail companies (shippers) and from different categories of logistic service providers from all countries of Europe in networking and exchange on future issues of European logistics.

Spain was the strategic location of choice for F&L’s event: fourth largest economy in the Euro zone, a thriving industrial sector, and critical function as ‘garden of Europe’. Pressure from stakeholders along the supply chain continues to drive innovation and ‘disruption’ across all sectors, capacity/service issues remain challenging, environment/society/politics present new problems and management needs tools and more information to plan for success in an uncertain global trading environment. Understanding, dialogue and positioning are critical as companies along the end-to-end supply chain find extra challenge in planning the next 3/5 years and beyond…

Interesting topics were discussed and examined in several sessions during the two days in Madrid:

Session 1: Industry insight: Retail and FMCG
Session 2: Visibility and tools for management control

Low Sulphur Cap, Green Shipping and Corporate Citizenship
TIM CONSULT realizes survey among MII Global Ocean Transport members

As part of a survey realized in March, TIM CONSULT asked members of the Market Intelligence Initiative Global Ocean Transport and other interested shippers about their expectations concerning reduction of the sulfur maximum content in bunker oil from 2020 onwards, their opinions on green shipping, and their corporate citizenship regarding environmental sustainability.

32 responses were received from companies in Consumer Goods, Chemicals, Paper & Packaging, and Technology sectors, answering 39 survey questions.

The survey results show conclusively that shippers have high concerns about freight rate impacts from the sulfur cap regulations. The majority indicated that significant container freight rate increases from 2020 onwards can be anticipated.

Almost half of the participants expect liner shipping companies to modify their vessel operations to consume the expensive low sulfur fuel instead of conversion to exhaust gas cleaner/scrubber or LNG propulsion.

Opinions regarding green shipping and corporate citizenship over the next five years also show clear trends. 84% of the participants believe that environmental consciousness will become more influential in business conduct and 70% expect their companies to increase corporate citizenship initiatives regarding environmental issues.

These are partial results of our survey. If you would like to receive details, please contact Stefan Diener at TIM CONSULT. He will be pleased to answer your questions and provide further information.

Optimized Container Logistics Procurement Through Advanced Benchmarking and Market Intelligence
Björn Klippel contributes article to guide “Container Logistics”

Whilst the maritime container business has been studied in depth, the impact on shippers and how shippers deal with the given challenges has not been fully examined. The book “Container Logistics – The Role of the Container in the Supply Chain” bridges this gap and looks at the maritime business from a customer’s perspective. The book examines the challenges, solutions and the latest developments in the container industry as well as the interaction between the different actors involved, such as freight forwarders, supply chain managers and shippers. Current hot topics from the supply chain and the maritime business perspective are included.

This makes “Container Logistics” an essential guide for supply chain managers and shippers, as well as academics and industry professionals working in the maritime business.

The book has been edited by Dr. Rolf Neise, expert for supply chain management and logistics structures and lecturer at the International School of Management (ISM). For this publication, Dr. Rolf Neise had gathered an international team of experts who delivered invaluable contributions with the inclusion of clear examples of best practice and bona fide case studies.

We are very pleased that Björn Klippel, Managing Director TIM CONSULT, was invited to contribute to this interesting guide.

In his article “Advanced benchmarking and market intelligence – a key instrument in optimizing container logistics procurement” Björn Klippel presents the impact of efficient benchmarking and market knowledge on optimal procurement management.

“Container Logistics – The Role of the Container in the Supply Chain” has been published by Kogan Page Limited and is available since beginning of May.

Fireside Chat North America
Intralogistik-NetzwerkBW and TIM CONSULT host event

In the seasonal spirit, TM CONSULT and the intralogistics network „Intralogistik-Netzwerk Baden Württemberg“ met in Mannheim on 14 December 2017 for a fireside chat to discuss “Business Development and Logistics Trends in North America“.

Gerhard Mutter, Member of the Executive Board Logistics Automation, SICK AG, and Björn Klippel, Managing Director, TIM CONSULT GmbH, moderated the event.

15 participants discussed the business opportunities and challenges arising from rapid automation and digitization of the US intralogistics sector (warehouse, material flow, transportation). On one hand, German producers of sensors, automation tools, and conveyor technology have a dominant position in Europe but are not yet at a comparable level in the USA. Penetrating and expanding in this vast market is complex given established native competitors. High start-up costs may conflict with strategic objectives.

Conversation also addressed the following questions: What would be the expectations that German technology could replace existing processes? Are German companies organizationally positioned for success in terms of location, competencies, and cost competitiveness? Should markets be approached directly or via intermediaries? Should Canada and Mexico be grouped together or considered as separate markets?

Attendees were careful listeners and active contributors as these topics were examined in detail. Robert Maidman, Director North America, TIM CONSULT Inc., participated via web conference. He shared his experiences from daily business contacts and provided useful insights into strategies and operational trends of US competitors. After the web conference, individual discussions continued on TIM CONSULT’s roof top – with snacks, drinks and a virtual chimney fire.

TIM CONSULT’s experts are at your disposition and will be pleased to answer any questions regarding the US market and US logistics. They will be pleased to speak with you.

Retrospective of the 7th TIM CONSULT Transport Day – International CEP Transports
Intelligent strategies to counter market concentration

How can shippers address supplier concentration in the Courier, Express and Parcel Services (CEP) market intelligently? What is the best strategy for continuing to purchase inexpensively and with a high quality of service? Are collaborations a good way to counter market concentration?

Exciting questions on the 7th TIM CONSULT Transport Day, held on November 7, 2017 and organized together with BVL Regional Group Rhein/Neckar led to lively discussions among the more than 50 participants.

Patrick Mense, BVL Regional Group Spokesman, and Björn Klippel, Managing Director of TIM CONSULT, welcomed the participants together with Prof. Dr. Michael Schröder, Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW).

Participants were provided with a structured overview of current market information on Europe-wide and global CEP services, insight into best practices in purchasing, and experience reports from leading companies.

With Lars Schumm, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, and Andreas Kuhn, Saint-Gobain Isover G+H, managers from respected industrial companies described their strategic solutions.

In addition, renowned transport service providers provided insights into their strategies and the resulting solutions for shippers in Europe and worldwide. Stefan Thömmes, Divisional Manager of Operations & IT at Trans-o-Flex, reported on a new service concept for complex CEP network traffic in Europe, in particular the integration of information services. Volker Böhringer, Chief Executive Officer for Region Europe at Panalpina, presented innovative concepts as an alternative for the CEP market of the future.

International CEP Transportation – Facing Market Concentration Intelligently
7. TIM CONSULT Transport Day Rhein/Neckar

E-Commerce knows no boundaries or borders. In the past, deliveries were made primarily within the domestic market. Today, mail-order companies are active all over Europe and even worldwide. As customer expectations reach new levels, freight costs become a serious competitive and margin factor. Supplier concentration is revolutionizing the options for courier, express and parcel services (CEP). Four express service suppliers have become three, controlling pricing and capacity.  Maximizing spend efficiency is both more challenging and crucial than ever.

How can shippers best manage? How can tenders be designed to secure highest delivery reliability at lowest cost? What is the best strategy for success?

These and many other questions will be answered at TIM CONSULT’s Transport Day in collaboration with the BVL Regional Group Rhein/Neckar. This event offers current market information about European and global CEP services, insights into procurement best practices, and compliant sharing of experience.

Current Trends in Worldwide Air Cargo Markets
TIM CONSULT invites you to attend its Market Intelligence Initiative Global Air Cargo Update Conference

After years of price erosion we currently observe a strengthening of global air freight prices, making reliable rate and capacity predictions more difficult than ever. Fuel costs, security issues and an unclear political environment remain high-impact factors critical to successful tendering.  Booming Asian demand and ocean freight carrier consolidation are stressing capacity and pressuring rates.

TIM CONSULT’s air cargo experts invite you to participate in the annual Update Conference of our Market Intelligence Initiative (MII) Global Air Cargo:

Update Conference MII Global Air Cargo
27th September 2017
10.00 am – 3.30 pm
THE SQUAIRE, Frankfurt Airport

Community members and interested shippers are cordially invited to attend the event. This is a great opportunity for non-members to get to know TIM CONSULT’s benchmark methodology and MII Global Air Cargo and meet those benefitting from this unique analysis.

Apart from the scheduled talks on several current topics, there will be plenty of time for peer discussions and networking. You will gain valuable information and insights.

Containers on the Trans-Siberian Railway
Land bridge container transport is new module of MII Global Ocean Transport

Container transport via rail from Europe to China (or reverse) has been used by a small number of early adopters for some time now but is increasingly becoming a mainstream transport solution. The intercontinental journey takes containers via the classic route of the Trans-Siberian Railway and its Manchurian extension or via the so-called “Southern Route” through Kazakhstan and the Chinese province of Sinkiang.

Ocean and air cargo shippers now have the chance to make use of an additional mode of transport which provides a compromise regarding cost and transit time between the established modes of air and ocean transportation.

In order to provide full cost and service level transparency to shippers, TIM CONSULT is now offering Land Bridge Container Transport as new module of its Market Intelligence Initiative Global Ocean Transport. Our goal is to generate a comprehensive, current picture of the market. That’s why the analysis is geared towards rate and service levels of the entire door-to-door transport chain. At the same time we provide a current overview of available and novel handling and service alternatives.

Participation in TIM CONSULT’s Land Bridge Container Transport Model is open to all interested parties.
